- "Twas a dark and stormy night." Actually it was a stormy Sunday noon in Huntington Beach in March 1993 when Jack suggested that he would build a roaring fire in the fireplace if Ann would fix an in-house picnic. And they would spend two hours in front of the fire with the picnic, an atlas, and The Places Rated Almanac deciding where they wanted to live and work. Several hours and a bottle of wine later, they had narrowed the continental US down to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, all places where they loved to vacation. In June a visit to Albuquerque and Santa Fe confirmed Jack's choice. As they returned from Santa Fe one afternoon, rather that turn right to the Super 8 at Exit 242, Jack said, "I wonder what's up this way to the left?" A move to New Mexico followed in September 1993. In February 1995, Jack built his first New Mexico spec house in Ranchos de Placitas on Cienega Canyon Road, which seemed a small start after his building over 800 homes in Southern California. Ironically, on September 11, 1997, Jack and Ann moved into "The House that Jack Built" in West Trails, four years to the month after they had settled in Albuquerque. Jack's company specializes in custom home construction with emphases on southwestern architecture style; he is a design/build contractor. Jack has been in the home building industry for 26 years and builds between 6 - 10 homes per year. In September 1999 he received the "Best Home Award" from the Placitas Home tour.

Bob Poling has been designing and building distinctive homes and elegant Southwestern Homes in Placitas since 1970.Capturing the available views and minimizing the impact on the land are high priorities in Bob's designs, which echo the drama of their sorrounding enviroment. His architectural designs grow out of the needs and desires of each client combined with the unique challenges and opportunities that each building lot presents. After many years of building all adobe homes, most of the recent homes have been of frame and stucco with adobe interior accent walls fireplaces and courtyard walls, although adobe or rastra exterior walls are available. The capturing of dramatic views, diamond-finish plastered interiors, stone or tile floors over radiant heat, granite countertops and custom-built cabinets, super insulation packages and 21st century wiring for all present and future electronic needs are signatures of Bob's "contemporary classic homes."

Early in life, Jim Maduena discovered that his true passion was designing and building structures in harmony with the environment. Jim knows the Placitas area very well. He is a direct descendant of the original twenty-one families that made up the two hundred fifty year old Las Huertas Land Grant, and as a youngster spent many summers with his grandparents in the old family home in Placitas Village. He studied environmental design and architecture at UNM, designed and built his own home and began his professional building career in the mid-eighties, shortly after his marriage to Gail McGough, herself a longtime Placitan. Gail is an associate broker with La Puerta Real Estate Services, LLC. Jim has created a niche for himself as a designer and builder of finely-crafted, unique homes through his company, J.G. Maduena Homes. Jim and Gail have long been deeply involved in Placitas community life. They are active members of Las Placitas Presbyterian Church, and Jim has served on the Sandoval County Planning and Zoning Commission. Jim is almost always at his work site. You are welcome to drop by any time, and he will show you how fine and careful building is achieved.
